Change, Learn, Leadership,

I have a passion for change, as is evidenced by it being a common search term on my site.

I also appear to have a thing for learning.

I have two favorite quotes on strategy. One by Herb Kelleher, and the other by John Wooden.

“Never try to be better than someone else, always learn from others. Never cease trying to be the best you can be — that’s under your control. If you get too engrossed and involved and concerned in regard to the things over which you have no control, it will adversely affect the things over which you have control.”

—Coach John Wooden

I used to blog about leadership a lot (over on creativeleadership.com) and it’s still top of mind for me.

Related to all of this, I think about the job of being a boss.

In summary, I believe that being a decent boss is about doing all you can to remember that it’s not about you. At all. It’s so easy to forget.

My Four Rules (1999)

And I try to stick to the 4 rules I set out to stand by (I fail ALL the time!) back in 1999.

Herb Kelleher says it all much better

“We have a strategic plan. It’s called ‘doing things.’”

“Treat your employees like customers.”

“Power should be reserved for weightlifting and boats, and leadership really involves responsibility.”

“I’ve always been able to make erroneous decisions very quickly.”

“If employees aren’t satisfied, they won’t promote the product we need.”

—Herb Kelleher (1931 – 2019)
