What is Design? Note on Bruno Munari

This is from 2013:

A few takeaways from this great book by Bruno Munari (first published when I was born!) are this quote by Maxim Gorky:

An artist is a (hu)man who digests [his/her] own subjective impressions and knows how to find a general objective meaning in them, and how to express them in a convincing form.

And Munari’s own take on design:

The designer of today re-establishes the long-lost contact between art and the public, between living people and art as a living thing.

Although this was shared by Munari more than a few decades ago, and by Gorky over a century ago, what they both say certainly rings true today. -JM
