Coach Pat Summitt: On Loyalty

I was studying sports coaches today and came across the late Pat Summitt (1952-2016):

“The absolute heart of loyalty is to value those people who tell you the truth, not just those people who tell you what you want to hear. In fact, you should value them most. Because they have paid you the compliment of leveling with you and assuming you can handle it.”

This is an extraordinary video to watch:

“We’ve got to be competitive. We’ve got to have communication. But we must have composure.”

and the comments from the YouTube video are extraordinary as well:

A legend that did not yell, went through her notes, included her coaches, let her players speak and said exactly what needed to happen…great stuff.

She was an amazing coach. Let everyone speak and didn’t yell, but motivate. Rest in paradise legend.

Loved how she asked her assistant coaches for advice during this.
